Air conditioning is almost always the biggest single line on a Bali electricity bill. In the villas and homes we service, AC routinely accounts for 50–70% of total PLN consumption β€” and a surprising amount of that is wasted. The good news is that cutting your AC running cost rarely means being less comfortable. After years of servicing units across the island, here is exactly where the waste comes from and how to stop it.

Why AC Is So Expensive to Run in Bali

Two things drive the cost. First, Bali's heat and humidity mean your AC works hard all year with no seasonal break. Second, PLN bills electricity on a tiered VA (volt-ampere) connection β€” higher-capacity household connections (such as 3,500 VA, 5,500 VA and above) are charged at the non-subsidised rate of roughly IDR 1,440–1,700 per kWh. A single hard-working 1.5 PK split unit can draw over 1 kWh an hour, so a few units running long hours add up to millions of rupiah a month very quickly. Anything that makes your AC work harder than necessary shows up directly on the bill.

1. Clean Your AC Regularly β€” the Biggest Single Saving

This is the one most people underestimate. A clogged filter and a dirty coil force the compressor to run longer to reach the set temperature. We regularly measure efficiency losses of 20–30% on units that have not been cleaned in six months or more. That is 20–30% extra electricity for the same cooling. A standard clean costs IDR 150,000 per unit; on a hard-working villa AC it often pays for itself in reduced power consumption within a month or two. Cleaning every 1–3 months is the single most cost-effective thing you can do for your bill.

2. Set a Smarter Temperature

Every degree colder costs you money. Setting the AC to 16Β°C does not cool the room faster β€” the unit simply runs flat-out for longer and never switches off. Set it to 24–25Β°C instead. The room still feels cool and comfortable in Bali's climate, the compressor cycles off once it reaches temperature, and you save meaningfully on every hour of use. For sleeping, 25–26Β°C with a fan is comfortable and dramatically cheaper than 18Β°C.

3. Stop Cooling the Outdoors

Open doors and windows are the silent budget killer in Bali. With 80–90% outdoor humidity, an open door means your AC is endlessly trying to dehumidify and cool the whole tropics. Keep external doors and windows closed while the AC runs, use door closers on frequently used doors, and seal obvious gaps. This single habit can cut an AC's run-time substantially.

4. Use Timers and Zoning

Cool the rooms you are actually in. There is no reason to run AC in empty bedrooms during the day or in the living room overnight. Use the unit's built-in timer or sleep mode to switch off automatically a couple of hours after you fall asleep. For rental villas, a simple welcome-book note asking guests to switch off AC in unused rooms protects your bill without anyone feeling restricted.

5. Service the Outdoor Unit Too

Many cleaners only touch the indoor unit. But a dirty, salt-encrusted outdoor condenser β€” common on every coastal property in Bali β€” cannot release heat efficiently, which forces the whole system to work harder and draw more power. Make sure your technician cleans the outdoor unit as well, especially if you are near the beach. It improves efficiency and extends the life of the most expensive part of the system.

6. Fix Small Faults Early

An AC low on refrigerant, with a failing capacitor, or with ice forming on the coil will run constantly while barely cooling β€” burning electricity the entire time. If a unit is running non-stop but the room never gets cold, that is not just a comfort problem, it is an expensive one. Early diagnosis and repair stops the meter spinning.

What This Looks Like on Your Bill

None of these steps requires new equipment β€” they are habits and routine maintenance. Together, regular cleaning, a sensible thermostat setting, keeping doors closed, and switching off empty rooms can cut a typical Bali AC running cost by a third or more. For a villa spending several million rupiah a month on electricity, that is a very real saving, month after month.
