Putting a new air conditioner into a Bali villa, apartment or office is one of those jobs that looks simple and quietly isn't. A split AC has an indoor and an outdoor unit linked by copper pipes, electrical cable and a drainage line, and getting all three right — in the tropics, on a wall you may not be able to drill freely — is the difference between a unit that cools quietly for ten years and one that drips, hisses and dies early. This guide walks through choosing the right size, the brands worth buying in Bali, exactly what a proper installation includes, and what it costs.

How to Choose the Right AC Size for Your Room

AC capacity in Indonesia is measured in PK (paardenkracht / horsepower), and matching it to the room is the single most important decision. Too small and the unit runs flat out, never cools properly and wears out fast; too big and it short-cycles, leaving the room cold but clammy because it never runs long enough to pull the humidity out — a real problem in Bali. As a rough guide for our climate: a ½ PK unit suits a small bedroom up to about 10 m²; 1 PK covers 10–18 m²; 1½ PK handles 18–24 m²; and 2 PK suits 24–36 m² living areas. Bump up a size for rooms with lots of glass, west-facing sun, high ceilings or heavy use — a sun-facing Seminyak or Canggu villa living room often needs more than the floor area alone suggests. When in doubt, tell us the room dimensions and orientation and we'll size it for you.

Best AC Brands Available in Bali

For a new install we generally steer clients toward brands with strong local parts support, because an AC is only as good as the technician who can get spares for it five years from now. Daikin and Panasonic are the reliable premium choices — efficient inverters, quiet, excellent parts availability island-wide. Sharp, LG and Samsung sit in the strong mid-range with good features and value. Mitsubishi Electric is superb but pricier. Budget brands like Gree, Midea and Changhong cost less up front and are fine for light-use rooms, but think twice about them for a hard-working rental. Almost everything sold now is an inverter unit, and for Bali that's the right call: inverters modulate their output instead of slamming on and off, which cools more steadily, handles humidity better and cuts your electricity bill — worth it given how many hours AC runs here. What's Included in a Full AC Installation

A proper installation is far more than hanging the indoor unit on a bracket. Done right, it includes: mounting the indoor unit level and secure on a solid wall; siting the outdoor unit somewhere shaded and ventilated — critical in Bali, and ideally away from direct salt spray on coastal properties; running and insulating the copper refrigerant pipes; running the electrical cable and, where needed, fitting a dedicated breaker; and installing the drainage line with proper fall so condensate actually runs away instead of pooling and leaking. Crucially, a good installer vacuums (evacuates) the pipework before releasing the refrigerant — this pulls out air and moisture that would otherwise corrode the system and kill efficiency. Skipping the vacuum is the most common corner cut on cheap Bali installs and it shortens the unit's life. We finish with a commissioning test: temperature check, drainage check and a leak check on every joint. The drainage and pipe insulation matter doubly in humid Bali, where a sloppy drain line means water down your wall within weeks.

Placement is the decision people regret most. The outdoor unit needs airflow and shade — bolting it into a hot, enclosed courtyard or under direct afternoon sun makes it run hotter, work harder and fail sooner, and it's the single most common installation mistake we're called back to correct. The drain outlet should empty somewhere sensible, not onto a walkway or a neighbour's wall. Indoors, aim the unit so the cold air sweeps across the room rather than straight down onto a bed, and keep it clear of curtains and shelves that block the airflow. Spending five extra minutes on placement at install time saves years of weak cooling and noise complaints.

One more thing worth planning before the technician arrives: think about future servicing. An outdoor unit jammed onto an unreachable roof or behind a locked grille is expensive to clean every time, and in Bali it will need cleaning often. Leaving safe access to both units keeps your ongoing maintenance costs down for the whole life of the system — a small consideration at install that pays off at every visit.

AC Installation Costs in Bali

Two costs go into a new AC: the unit and the installation labour. The unit itself ranges widely — roughly IDR 3–5 million for a budget 1 PK, IDR 5–8 million for a quality inverter, and more for premium 2 PK and cassette units. Installation labour typically runs IDR 350,000–700,000 for a standard split unit where the wall is straightforward and pipe runs are short. Costs rise with longer pipe runs (extra copper and insulation per metre), a difficult wall that needs core-drilling, high or awkward outdoor-unit placement, or extra electrical work. A typical villa fit-out of several bedrooms is best quoted per room after we see the layout. Whatever the number, insist on the vacuum step and proper drainage — paying a little more for a correct install is far cheaper than the repairs and early replacement a bad one guarantees. FAQ

Do you supply the AC unit or just install it? Both. We can supply and install a new unit of your chosen brand, or install one you've already bought.

What size AC do I need? Tell us the room size and orientation. As a guide, 1 PK suits ~10–18 m², 2 PK suits ~24–36 m²; sunny or glass-heavy rooms need a size up.

How long does installation take? A single straightforward split unit takes about 2–4 hours. A multi-bedroom villa is usually a one-day job depending on pipe runs.

Does the price include wiring and drainage? Yes — a full install covers pipe, wiring, insulation, the drain line and a commissioning test. We'll flag any extra cost (long runs, core-drilling) before starting.

Which areas do you install in? All of Bali — villas and homes in Canggu, Ubud, Kuta, the Bukit and beyond.
